Cool Information
More than forty years after the Titanic disaster, one of the last of the great Atlantic Liners met a similar fate.On the evening of July 25,1956, southwest of Nantucket Island, the Swedish liner STOCKBOLM collided with the Italian Luxury liner
Andrea Doria, which sank eleven hours later. Despit
the presece of sophisticated radar equipment on
both ships, the collision happened at almost full
speed. Advances in design and safety features could
not keep the Andrea Doria afloat. Fortunately, other
ships soon arrived on the scene and only the passengers and crew killed in the initial collision
were lost.

THE SHIP OF DREAMS
Titanic began with great promise and ended in great tragedy. On April 2,1912,the Royal Mail Steamer Titanic departed Belfast for a breif but successful series of sea trails. Later that day Titanic was on her way to Southampton, where she would join her year-old sister,R.M.S Olympic,in providing regular trans-Atlantic service between Europe and America. Because the Titanic had slightly more enclosed space than the Olympic, she could claim to be the largest ship in the world. The press and public dubbed her unsinkible. Her loss would be the most shocking sea disaster in history. |
